The Accidental Entrepreneur

Owner & founder of CastCoverz!, Annette Giacomazzi, started out just like any other empathetic mom… wanting to make her daughter’s 6th broken bone a little more bearable. Annette began creating cute & fun covers for Elli’s casts, which quickly evolved into slings, seasonally themed cast covers– you name it! The ideas just kept coming!  Friends and family are supposed to “ooh” and “aah” and be supportive of an injured child or a mom with an idea.  But, it’s when strangers stopped them on the street that Annette had her “AHA!” moment and CastCoverz! was born.

First, Annette’s family contributed as the hands and feet of the business, out of their home.  The first employees even worked out of their home!  Eventually, CastCoverz! expanded to a warehouse that required a full team of sewists, shippers and customer service gems! Having found a unique niche in the orthopedic retail market, Annette created a flourishing business.

Fast forward 13 years, CastCoverz! is now the largest online retailer for orthopedic products and has earned its title by providing fun & functional products to comfort orthopedic patients. We are proud to have served hundreds of thousands of customers and retailers around the world.

How-to-Keep-Sand-Out-of-Your-Cast-and-Walking-Boot

How to Keep Sand Out of Your Cast and Walking Boot

Do your summer plans include going to the beach, but you’re wondering how you’ll keep the sand out of your cast or orthopedic walking boot? We have some solutions for you!  CastCoverz! offers FUNctional products for comfort and care while casted, bandaged, braced, in a boot, or on crutches.

Here are a few tips from CastCoverz! to help keep the sand out of your cast or walking boot:

1.  DryPro –  lets you enjoy swimming at the pool, beach, or lake without the fear of getting your cast wet AND keeps the sand out (available for both arms and legs.) SAFETY ALERT: NOT TO BE USED WITH AN ORTHOPEDIC BOOT!!

2.  Slickerz! – For your leg cast or bandages, cover it with a CastCoverz! innovation, Slickerz!  Slickerz! is a weatherproof protective cover made in-the-USA which keeps 97% of the sand granules out. *Not a waterproof or an immersion-in-water product.

3.  Glad® Press‘n Seal® for your boot or your cast – Press’n Seal seals tight on a variety of surfaces, including skin! Just wrap Press’n Seal around a cast (make sure to overlap so 1″ or 2″ of your skin provides the seal). It will keep you dry for light water activities (splash and plays, sprinklers, etc…) and will keep sand out, too! To keep sand out of your toes while in a boot, wrap your leg with Press’n Seal and then put your boot on. Sand will still collect on the boot, but at least your toes will be sand free! 🙂 CAUTION: FOR YOUR SAFETY never cover the bottom of a boot with any product.

4. BootGuardzXtreme to keep out sand- While many of our customers utilize this innovative product for severe weather conditions (such as rain or snow!), BootGuardzXtreme serves a double purpose! Engineered to stretch around side edge of boot, this cover is perfect for keeping sand OUT of your walking boot; however, it is designed with an open bottom exposing the tread for safety. This product is not waterproof, although the material is water resistant if exposed to moisture. Fits most high and low orthotic walking boots such as DonJoy™, Aircast®, Össur®, Darco®, DeRoyal®, etc. Please check sizing chart for accuracy before ordering! If you’re unsure whether or not this would be a good solution for your next beach trip- don’t hesitate to call us for more info!

5.  Mittz! – Keep sand out of hand casts, braces and splints with Mittz!, our made-in-the-USA impervious to sand and dirt cover. Because it is a seamed product, it is not for immersion in water.

CastCoverz! provides fun, function-able, and fashionable covers for casts, braces, splints, boots, slings, crutches and so much more! These covers will help keep your cast clean and snag-free from items such as your clothing, furniture, and other people! CastCoverz! fabric cast covers are for daily wear (not for sand or water because fabric is a weaved product allowing sand granules/water to seep in).

How to Survive the Holidays on One Foot

How to Survive the Holidays on One Foot

Christmas is a magical time of the year…so much to see and do…so little time. Add to that the fact that this year, you only have one foot on which to do it all and Christmas becomes a bit of a nightmare. How will you do it? Here are a few tips to help you survive and even enjoy the holiday season despite your injury.

Tip #1:  Scale Back

You say you’re going to do it every year, and yet you never do. This year it’s the time to actually do it.  Everyone will understand if your house isn’t decorated to the hilt. Your family will understand if you want to skip a few parties to rest. And your friends will know why they are getting gift cards instead of a carefully chosen gift. You might even find that doing less allows you to enjoy more!

Tip #2:  Ask for Help

There’s nothing wrong with asking for a little help, especially during the holiday season. If you need help decorating, running errands, or getting around in the cold and snow, just ask! People are in a very giving spirit this time of year and they will likely welcome your requests with open arms. You simply can’t do it all on one foot so ask for help and do what you can!

Tip #3:  Look into Alternatives to Crutches

In order to enjoy as much mobility as possible during Christmas and the duration of your recovery, consult a company such as KneeRover® and see what options there are that can help you get off those crutches and onto a device that will help you get around with more comfort and ease. The Seated Scooter is ideal for snow and ice because you can sit and scoot yourself around ensuring that you will never slip and fall.  The Steerable Knee Scooter is also very stable and allows you to kneel, scoot and “move free” while you keep your bad leg up and elevated.  Another product, the iWALK3.0 Hands Free Crutch, helps you to retain the use of both hands at all times while you get around. Think about how each of the three options works and choose what would be best for your needs.

Tip #4:  Schedule Rest

It’s easy to get into the family celebrations and parties and forget about what your recovery needs are. It is important, however, to make sure you get the rest you need in order to keep your healing on track. Once you know how much rest you need, be sure that you get it no matter what else is going on.

Tip #5:  Don’t Overdo it

It’s easy to overdo it on Christmas, even with two feet under you. When you’re on just one, that task is even easier. Listen to your body carefully and make sure you only do what you really feel you can do. You don’t want to spend more time recovering because you overexerted yourself during the holidays.

Tip #6:  Invite and Decline

If it’s easier for you to host than to attend parties this year, invite the people you really want to see over and decline other invitations. It’s okay to skip a few things and do other things differently this year. You can go back to doing it all next year!

Tip #7:  Put Recovery Items on your Gift List

There are a number of things you might want to add to your list to help you get through Christmas and the rest of your recovery. CastCoverz! cast and walking boot covers will not only keep your toes warm and dry this winter, but you’ll also be giving your orthopedic device lots of personality! Be sure to check out CastCoverz! CrutchWear crutch covers for comfort and convenience, too! The shower stool can help you enjoy your showers again. If you’re a hard-to-buy-for person, these items that you really want and need are great ideas.
