5 Essential Tips for Taking Care of Your Cast

If you’re wearing a cast, brace, splint, or boot, taking care of it is just as important as following your doctor’s instructions. The right care helps your injury heal properly while keeping you comfortable along the way. Here are five essential tips to make cast life a little easier:

1. Keep It Dry

Moisture is your cast’s worst enemy. A wet cast can weaken, lose shape, and even cause skin irritation or infection. Always cover your cast before bathing or showering, and avoid swimming unless you have a waterproof cover.

2. Don’t Put Anything Inside Your Cast

Itchy skin under a cast is normal, but resist the urge to stick objects like pencils, hangers, or anything sharp inside to scratch. Doing so can damage your skin, increase the risk of infection, or even injure you further. Instead, try our CastCooler® Itchy Cast Reliever which keeps your cast fresh and reduces itch by removing moisture from the lining under your cast using an everyday vacuum cleaner!

3. Wiggle Your Toes or Fingers

If your cast is on an arm or leg, gently wiggling your fingers or toes can help improve circulation and reduce swelling. It’s a small movement that makes a big difference in keeping your blood flowing.

4. Protect Against the Elements

Casts and splints aren’t made for the outdoors. Sand, snow, dirt, or rain can sneak inside and cause irritation—or worse, damage the cast itself. Always use a cover before heading outside to protect it from the elements. We have many covers that help protect your cast from sand, snow, and rain.

5. Keep It Clean (and Scratch-Free!)

Casts, braces, and boots tend to catch on clothes, bedding, and furniture. They can also get dirty quickly. That’s where CastCoverz! comes in! Our stylish, Made-in-the-USA protective covers keep your cast clean, prevent snagging and scratching, and make wearing a cast a little more fun.

Taking care of your cast doesn’t have to be complicated. With these simple steps, and the right cover, you can stay clean, comfortable, and confident while your body heals. If you have any questions at all, our US-based customer service team is ready to help you choose the right products for you or your loved one’s injury.

Caring For Your Cast During COVID-19

Caring For Your Cast During COVID-19

COVID-19 has heightened our awareness of all things CLEAN.

From face masks to manic disinfecting, we’ve quickly learned that germs & viruses spread rapidly; consequently, we’ve been forced to become diligent about protecting ourselves & our loved ones during this strange time.

If you’re currently healing in a cast, you know how DIFFICULT it is to care for your cast properly.  In fact, you have to be even more aware of what germs you are tracking into your home on a plaster cast or orthopedic device that can’t just be thrown into the washing machine.

 So what’s the solution?!

Our team of orthopedic device experts have brainstormed some simple life hacks for you, as you face the day-to-day challenges of living with a cast during a pandemic.

Here are our Top 3 Cast Care Tips:

  1. Keep it dry – invest in a watertight cast protector for your Arm or Leg Cast (we recommend our very own AquaShieldUSA); this will allow you to shower without having to worry about water sneaking into your cast.
  2. Never place anything inside your cast – we know an itchy cast is no fun, but trying to scratch inside your cast can not only damage the device, but can also transfer germs or bacteria to the inside as well.
  3. To prevent scratching, snagging, and to keep your cast CLEAN and dry, cover it with CastCoverz! products – the EASIEST solution for keeping your device germ-free is to keep it covered! The beauty of our covers is that you can throw your cast cover in the washing machine at the end of the day or rotate out with another clean cover, as needed.  No more
crawling into bed, wondering what germs you’re sleeping with at night, either! From FUNctional daily wear to cozy night time covers (Sleeperz!), we’ve got you covered!

And of course, as experts continue to study the outbreak & spreading pandemic, we encourage you to continue making your health a priority.  Consuming nutritious foods, washing your hands, getting rest (particularly while healing!) and getting some Vitamin D daily has been proven to boost the immune system.

We’re sending you healing hugs & wishing you a speedy recovery. Stay happy & healthy! This too shall pass…
