Winter is a beautiful season, but it can be very dangerous and painful if you’re not careful!
Ask anyone what the #1 reason is for broken arms and broken legs during the winter and the answer you most often hear is, “slipping and falling on ice.” That is actually a distant second to the number one reason, winter sports (ice hockey, ice skating, sledding, skiing, snowmobiling, snowboarding, snow tubing and tobogganing).
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons noted that in 2008, 650,000 hospital Emergency Rooms and doctor’s visits were due to winter sports-related injuries. Surprisingly, slipping and falling on a patch of ice accounts for only 5,800 visits. Setting up lights, indoor or outdoor, produces a significant number of broken bones, too.
